“This family dinner thing is killing me!” — Sawyer, as we sat down to eat at 7:50 pm on Sunday (he’d declared the bacon an appetizer about 7)
And so month two of feeding my family, feeding Africa, feeding my soul begins. It has been a wonderful — and busy — month. I can’t imagine December will be any less so.
We’re dropping some cash this week on Christmas so really trying to eat cheaply until, well, I guess until the end of the month. This week’s menu starts with a look in The Land of Forgotten Food (aka, the freezer).
Sunday: Had breakfast a la Clyde for dinner — biscuits and gravy (he made a veggie version for Noah, made a sausage AND bacon version for the rest of us), cheesy eggs, and OJ blended with bananas (we keep them in the freezer when they get a little too ripe to eat).
Monday: Noah gets home from rock climbing about 7:45 pm (yes, we’ll feed his poor little brother a big snack before then). We have brats and corn in the freezer; salad on the side and I call it dinner.
Tuesday: Having breakfast together (banana bread and hot tea, I think). I’d planned for our family dinner to be at a local church event, Breaking Bread & Barriers. The event was coordinated by Justice for Our Neighbors (a group created through the United Methodist Church to offer free legal services to immigrants) and, hopefully, will be attended by people of many different nationalities. “As we come to the table together to celebrate and enjoy each other’s cultures, let us establish new friendships and strengthen old ties by learning about our neighbors,” Rev. Annelda Crawford said at the first Breaking Bread & Barriers in September. The event will start with communion and finish with a pot luck dinner. I’ve invited friends from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe and can’t wait to see who else shows up. Clyde, Sawyer and I will be there, but Noah has rock climbing team pictures (of course).
Wednesday: Both boys have guitar at 5 pm, Sawyer has practice from 6-6:45 pm for the church musical. I’m making soup today for a friend who is having a lumpectomy, so looks like Tracy Soup all around. Post-soup — the Christmas tree goes up!
Thursday: Lemon rosemary baked tofu, sweet potatoes (mashed with a little butter and OJ mixed in), and green beans after Noah gets home from climbing.
Friday: Breakfast again as we’re having some friends over for a Christmas celebration tonight and the kids are staying in Waxahachie. No school today, Clyde’s off — sounds like a pancake kind of day to me.
Saturday: UT in the final game before the Rose Bowl. Chili around the TV and fireplace sounds like the perfect cheering atmosphere.
